Downtown Jozi has a new hangout – The Sheds@1 Fox

Move over Arts on Main and Neighbourgoods; there is a new kid on the block – The Sheds @ 1Fox opened on 2nd October, in conjunction with the start of the Joburg City Festival. Located in downtown Joburg, right next to the Johannesburg Central Police Station, this new pop-up market differs from its contemporaries in that it will be operating from Thursday to Sunday, instead of just one day of the week.

Since I missed going to the market on its opening night, I decided to check it out today. Although it was pretty quiet, being Friday afternoon and all, the place looks very promising. Old industrial warehouses, dating back to the 1920’s, have been refurbished to house this market. However, the original character of the buildings has been retained to give the market an old and rustic charm.

Similar to the other artisanal markets, The Sheds houses stalls selling freshly made tacos, burgers, Thai delicacies, Indian samoosas, waffles, home-made ice-cream, coffee, bubble tea and Champagne & oysters! In addition, there are two bars on site. Apparently, in the earlier days, a liquor license had been granted for Ferreira’s Bar  in 1893 and for the Good Luck Bar in 1895!

Albeit in its nascent stages, The Sheds is bound to become a regular hangout for the inner city lovers, just as the other markets have. The developers are also hoping to turn this space into a more permanent retail and entertainment hub. So keep your ears open for more news on The Sheds@1Fox!
