I love local markets and there are hardly any in Joburg that I have not been to over the last three years. But if I was to choose my favourite, it would definitely be the trendy and chic Kamersvol Geskenke. Touted as SA’s biggest pop-up market, Kamers (which means rooms), first started in 2003, in a few ‘rooms’ of a house in Stellenbosch.
What sets this market apart from the rest is the uniqueness and quality of the products sold. The aim of Kamers has always been to provide a platform to creative and budding entrepreneurs, especially women, through which they could showcase their products and meet potential customers. The organisers screen each exhibitor rigorously and only when they meet the required standard, are they allowed to sell their products at the market. This ensures that the customers only get the best of the best.
Last December was the first time I went to the Kamers market (you can read about it here). I was so enamoured that I could hardly wait for it to be back again this year! What made things even more special was receiving an invite to visit the market as a media guest!
The popularity of the market is so great that even on a Wednesday the parking was almost full at 10am! Scores of women were strutting around from stall to stall, busy picking out their favourite wares. Another reason I love this market is because not only are the products beautiful, the people buying them are equally beautiful too! It appeared that barring me, everyone else had made a huge effort to dress up and look nice. Chic outfits and matching accessories with perfect hair and makeup were the order of the day.
Jewellery definitely seemed to have taken centre stage this year. There were a large number of exhibitors selling beautiful hand-crafted earrings, rings, bracelets and neck pieces. Other products being sold were home furnishings, dresses, hand bags, kid’s clothing, stuff crafted out of wine barrels, lighting and stationery. Hand crafted fudge and yummy baked goodies were also selling like hot cakes.
The great background music, a beautiful venue, ample availability of bubbly and the delicious gourmet food, ensured that shoppers had a fun and relaxing experience. Several big groups of friends were seen making a grand day of this!
The market is on until the 6th of December at the Open Window Institute in Irene. So if you haven’t been already, make sure you don’t miss this great pop-up market. Or you will be left waiting for another full year.
