Well anyone who has either lived or visited South Africa will vouch for the awesome meat that is available in this country. Whether it’s beef or game meat such as kudu, ostrich, springbok, etc., SA is meat heaven for all meat lovers. The number of places you can grab a T-bone, rib-eye, rump or a simple fillet, are endless.
To make life a little simpler, here is a short list of my favourite places to grab a steak in Joburg:
This place needs no introduction. Located in Parktown North, the Local Grill is famous for its free range and grain fed beef and it is THE place to eat if you want the freshest, most succulent steaks made to perfection. It is not surprising that the restaurant won the 2014 Eat Out Award for the Best Steakhouse. The reason for the success of this eatery is that the owners are passionate about the meat. From the diet of the animals to the procurement of the beef and its aging – the restaurant maintains strict standards.
The best part is that the owners encourage tours to the kitchen and the meat locker where they explain the different types of beef. It was the first time I had seen so much beef!
If you are unsure of which cut to order, try their beef sampler which offers a fillet, rump and sirloin! For the non-beef eaters, there is ample choice – calamari, salmon, chicken, venison, to name a few.

The Grillhouse has been a recent find and we would not have tried it had the Local Grill not been closed for dinner on Sundays! We had to entertain an out-of-towner, who as expected, wanted to have steak. So after a little research on the Grillhouse, we opted for the branch at Rosebank over the one at Athol Square. When we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see the restaurant more than half full on a sunday. Just that speaks volumes about it.
This eatery has a more formal feel than the Local Grill and has a sophisticated vibe. We were allotted a nice plush booth and a very large wine list. Our waiter even suggested that we should take a walk into their wine cellar to pick out wines not listed on the menu! We settled for a bottle of the Warwick First Lady as I felt that the wines were quite overpriced.
At the Grillhouse, not just the meat, but the other stuff was also very good. We ordered a plate of calamari and a mezze platter – both of which arrived in no time at all and were delicious.
For the main course, I decided to try the pepper crusted Ostrich medallions while the others ordered spiced fillets. What I really liked about this place was that they offered a spiced version of the steak, which basically means pepper crusted, besides the usual basted ones.
This eatery is a little more pricey than the other steakhouses but ideal for special occasions and celebrations.

In all honesty, this one is on my wish list! I have walked past it a couple of times, but am I yet to try it out. From what I hear, this place is known for its burgers, pork ribs and pulled pork sandwiches. The bacon wrapped poppers are also in high demand.
The fact that its located in quirky Braamfontein means that the vibe will be pretty awesome! Will update you as soon as I am able to try this place.
UPDATE: I finally managed to eat at the Smokehouse and my review can be found here.
